Biography
Speaker's Photo As President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of iDefense, a VeriSign company, Joseph Payne is responsible for the operations of the company, including the intelligence organization, sales, marketing and product development at iDefense. In addition to managing daily activities, he is charged with developing strategic and tactical plans for these departments.

In his career, Mr. Payne has held numerous leadership positions in Enterprise Software companies. Prior to joining iDefense, he was President & CEO of eSecurity Inc., the leading provider of Real-Time Threat Management Software, responsible for its strategic direction and daily operations. Mr. Payne was President and CEO of eGrail, a Bethesda-based enterprise software company. In April 2002, Mr. Payne successfully engineered the sale of eGrail 's assets to FileNet Corporation.

Additionally, Mr. Payne offers more than 15 years of leadership and experience from some of the world's most recognized companies. Mr. Payne served as Chief Marketing Officer at MicroStrategy Inc. where he was responsible for the worldwide marketing of its products to customers, prospects, media, investors and all constituencies associated with the company. Mr. Payne also held several executive-level positions at InteliData Technologies, including President and CEO of its Telecommunications Division. In addition, Mr. Payne served as Vice President of Marketing for Royal Crown Company Inc., a manager in the Brand Group at Coca-Cola USA , and a brand assistant at Procter & Gamble on the "Mr. Clean" brand.

Mr. Payne is a Fuqua Scholar and received his M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Duke University.

Abstract:
Security issues for open source technologies continue to be of major concern for all organizations. Because of the very nature of open source software, there are several security issues to consider. When evaluating the vulnerability of open source technologies it is important to consider both the code verification process, the structure of the group involved in the project as well as whom the contributors are. This presentation will discuss the latest analysis on popular open source technologies including: Apache, Kerberos, Tomcat and MySQL.
