Session SP33: Modern Day Slavery in the Arab/Muslim World
February 20, 11:00 - 11:15
Abstract:
A discussion of modern day slavery in the Muslim/Arab world with specific emphasis on slavery in Sudan and the trafficking of Southeast Asian women to the Middle East. Jesse Sage, Associate Director of the American Anti-Slavery Group, will provide an overview of the issue and give the context for presentations by slavery survivors Simon Deng and Beatrice Fernando. Mr. Simon Deng will speak from his own experience as a former slave from Southern Sudan and will discuss the phenomena of slavery and genocide in Sudan today. Ms. Beatrice Fernando, a survivor of slavery who was trafficked from Sri Lanka to Lebanon, will describe her experience as well as government complicity in the modern day slave trade from Southeast Asia to the Middle East.
