Biography
Speaker's Photo Marshall Beddoe is currently performing research and development at MuSecurity, creating a next generation vulnerability discovery platform. Prior to Mu, Marshall was a senior research scientist at McAfee, Inc. performing security research on a wide range of subject matter. Marshall's main interests revolve around cross disciplinary approaches to information security. This interest has allowed him to pioneer research in the area of protocol reverse engineering, vulnerability discovery and decentralized systems. Marshall is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and has presented material for the U.S. military and Fortune 500 companies.

Session TE13: Information Warfare
February 18, 11:00 - 11:45
A Cross Disciplinary Approach to Information Security
Abstract:

Security research is currently performed by a relatively small community of people. While the size of the researcher community allows information to be shared efficiently, the community over specializes themselves, causing difficulty for the natural introduction of more abstract and metaphorical concepts. The purpose of this talk is to present concepts adapted from the study of biological systems in order to solve and/or optimize currently existing problems found in the realm of information security.

This talk will discuss:
  • Structural analysis of file formats and network protocol packets using biological sequence algorithms adapted from genomics research.
  • Optimized decentralized worm propagation algorithms borrowing concepts of emergent behavior from insects and other natural phenomenon.
