Gordon Cucullu is a former Special Forces lieutenant colonel with more than four decades of experience dealing with the tumultuous region of East Asia, including North and South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China and Southeast Asia. He is Senior Non-resident Fellow at the Center for Security Policy. His best-selling book, Separated at Birth: How North Korea became the Evil Twin, has been acclaimed as one of the best insights into the convoluted, long-running conflict between South and North Korea. He paints a stark portrait of the dark world of Kim Jong Il’s rogue regime, the most egregious human rights violator on earth, and perhaps the only state in history to be supported primarily by illegal and criminal activities. Gordon is recognized as one of the leading authorities on the complex, dangerous threat posed by North Korea through its deadly connections to other American enemies in the war for the free world.

Gordon is a contributor to Frank Gaffney’s seminal work War Footing: Ten Steps America must take to Prevail in the War for the Free World. This master work examines the current and future threat from a global, geopolitical perspective and offers options for military, diplomatic, economic, technological, energy, and immigration threats.

Gordon is a popular speaker and lecturer. He appears frequently before a variety of groups and organizations, including professional, civic, and academic, wherever there is a concerned, informed audience. He combines an historian’s long view with a keen analyst’s eye, always tempered by an irreverent sense of humor. Gordon is a regular contributor to Front Page Magazine, Tech Central Station, and Human Events Online. His articles appear often in The American Enterprise magazine as well as other electronic and print media. He has contributed to the New York Post, the Washington Times, the Jerusalem Post and many other publications. He is a frequent guest on Fox News Channel and was on-camera analyst for WABC Channel 7 in New York City during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Continuing Crisis of North Korea
Abstract:
For decades North Korea has posed the most serious threat of destabilization in Northeast Asia. While the regional powers have moved toward greater economic interdependencies since the fall of the Soviet Union, North Korea has continued to upset the political balance by blustering threats, open manufacture of weapons of mass destruction, and grotesque human rights abuses.

Since the mid-1990s with the coincidental signing of the Agreed Framework and the death of the original dictator Kim Il Sung, the situation has only grown more tense. Kim's son and successor Kim Jong Il violated the principles of the Agreed Framework from the outset by continuing to pour scarce resources into a nuclear development program. Meanwhile, the US and supporting nations of Japan, South Korea, Russia, and China propped up the decaying Kim regime through massive infusion of assistance. Tragically, little or none reached the starving people of North Korea but were diverted to the military and to the black market.

Hence we are faced in the early part of this century with a country that exists of an economy of crime and deceit: counterfeiting, drug manufacture and trafficking, export of banned missiles and technology, and sale of weapons of mass destruction are virtually the only sources of income for the faltering regime. Thought of implosion brings with it fear of massive refugee flow with attendant health and management problems, and the always-present possibility of irrational attacks on neighbors.

Gordon Cucullu will discuss these and other factors that brand the Kim Jong Il regime one of the world's most egregious human rights violators and a legitimate charter member of the Axis of Evil. Gordon has addressed many of these topics in his recent book Separated at Birth: How North Korea became the Evil Twin.
